Ferrari's Charles Leclerc won the first pole since 2019 in the qualifying round at the Monaco Grand Prix. However, the qualifying session came to an abrupt end when Leclerc grazed a barrier to break a suspension piece. Notably, Leclerc could receive a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change.

Max Verstappen seals second position in Monaco GP Qualifying Session

The red flag due to the crash prevented Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen from completing their final qualifying lap. Verstappen will start second for Red Bull, while the 7-Time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton will start at 7th.

“I am worried about a penalty. I’ve always been very unlucky here, so let’s just wait and see,” said Leclerc. “It’s a shame to finish in the wall, it’s doesn’t feel the same but I’m incredibly happy about my lap.”

Apart from these results, McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo, who won the Monaco GP in 2018 missed, out on a spot in the Q3 session.

With the race set to commence on May 23 2021, it remains to be seen whether or not Ferrari are able to live up to their key form.
