In a significant development, Chelsea forward Sam Kerr will be the first female player to feature on the global cover of Electronic Arts' FIFA video game when the franchise launches 'FIFA 23' this year. The gaming developer confirmed on Monday that Kerr will feature alongside PSG forward and France's WC winner Kylian Mbappe, who has adorned the cover of the last two editions.

While representing Chelsea at the Women's Super League, Sam Kerr was the top scorer last season with 20 goals in as many as appearances. She has also netted 56 goals in 108 appearances for Australia since her debut in 2009 at the age of 15.

EA Sports FIFA revealed the cover on Twitter and wrote, "Two phenomenal forces up front. One ultimate strike partnership." In the post, both players are in their club kit.

"Its an honor and a dream come true to be on the cover of FIFA 23. Its been an incredible to work with Kylian Mbappe and the whole EA Sports team, and I can't wait for fans to get their hands on a copy of the game," said Sam Kerr.

Even Mbappe responded on his appearance on the cover for the third time by saying that he is thrilled to have been picked for the cover of EA Sports FIFA. "I am even more excited to share a cover honoring women's football with a great player," said Mbappe.

Notably, this is the 30th edition of the game, produced by UK company Electronic Arts and the last to be produced in conjunction with the sports' governing body FIFA.

Earlier, Alex Morgan appeared on the American edition and Christine Sinclair the Canadian. But no woman has previously been on the global edition.
