
Colombo Strikers and Jaffna Kings have been terminated from the Lanka Premier League ahead of the upcoming season of the Sri Lankan Cricket league. Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) and The IPG Group, the stakeholders in the league, have officially announced the termination of the two franchises.
The Lanka Premier League was inaugurated in 2020 with the involvements of five teams: Colombo Strikers, Dambulla Thunders, Galle Marvels, Jaffna Kings and Kandy Falcons. Now, two of the franchises, including Colombo Strikers and Jaffna Kings have been terminated from the league as confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket.
“Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), as the owner of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), together with The IPG Group, the event rights holder of the LPL, wishes to officially announce that the franchise partnerships of the Colombo Strikers and Jaffna Kings have been terminated," the statement was quoted as saying by Cricket Addictor.
Colombo and Jaffna to get new ownership in LPL 2025
With the termination of the two franchises, the two cities, Colombo and Jaffna will be seen in action under a new ownership in the upcoming season of the Lanka Premier League in 2025. The IPG Group has communicated to the Sri Lankan cricket board and confirmed to get new owners for both the cities in the T20 league.
"The IPG Group has formally communicated to SLC that the terminations have been effected due to the respective franchises’ failure to fulfill their contractual obligations as stipulated under the agreements entered into at the commencement of their participation in the league. Consequent to the above, the forthcoming edition of the Lanka Premier League will feature franchises representing Colombo and Jaffna under new ownership,” the statement read.
