Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo ensured that he maintained his record of netting at least a goal in every Champions League encounter this season after he scored the opening goal in the club's 2-0 win over Villarreal. The goal has taken the 36-year-old's tally to 140 in the Champions League and a total of 799 for his club and country.

Ronaldo is at par with the current top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski who had also scored on Tuesday night and now has nine goals from five matches this season. As far as Ronaldo is concerned, he has six goals in the competition so far in five Champions League matches.

With a place in the final 16 confirmed, the Portuguese superstar will now have a minimum of two fixtures to extend his record as the most prolific goalscorer in the history of the competition.

Other than the goal from Ronaldo, it was a goal from Jadon Sancho that handed Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick his first win two days after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked as their manager. Carrick dedicated the win to the former manager Solskjaer.

"It's not been an easy couple of days for anyone at the club and that result almost feels like it's for Ole," said Carrick post the match as quoted in a BBC report.

"We had a job to do and things needed to be taken care of. I was happy to do it and thankfully it all went to plan," he added.

"When you've suffered results-wise and aren't in good form, individually and as a team, it's not easy to come out and let everything click - we had to show some character and fight," he further stated.

Following the performance, Ronaldo also sent a message to his fans on Instagram.

"Always great to play in Spain, amazing to win in Spain, satisfying to score in Spain, a country where I always felt special… Congrats to the lads for a great victory that puts us where we belong! We are Man. United and we will never stop fighting for this club! Let’s go, Devils! ???? #MUFC," Ronaldo captioned a few pictures of himself from the match.
