Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal took on Uruguay in their second group-stage fixture at the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Monday. Portugal defeated Uruguay 2-0 as Bruno Fernandes scored a brace. While Fernandes scored the first goal in the 54th minute as he curled in a cross from the left plank, he scored the second one through penalty in the 90+3’. Fernades also came close to scoring a hat-trick twice but could not convert the chances.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo was left unhappy with a decision made during the game. The Portugal captain did not like the fact that the first goal Portugal scored was ultimately awarded to Bruno Fernandes. Ronaldo believed that he got a touch on the ball when Fernandes curled in from the left flank. Although he did not do his trademark 'SIUU' style, Ronaldo celebrated his goal, only to find later that it had officially been credited to Fernandes.

The former Man United striker was also seen complaining about the same after the match ended. Ronaldo’s fans were also left fuming at the decision as they started debating about the same on Twitter. Meanwhile, reports have also emerged that Portugal might appeal officially against the decision.

Nevertheless, they might not need to take any such action as Adidas issued a clarification on whether Ronaldo did score that goal or whether it was right on part of the officials to award the goal to Fernandes.

According to the Daily Mail, Adidas released a statement saying: “In the match between Portugal and Uruguay, using the Connected Ball Technology housed in Adidas's Al Rihla Official Match Ball, we are able to definitively show no contact on the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo for the opening goal in the game.

“No external force on the ball could be measured as shown by the lack of ‘heartbeat’ in our measurements and in the attached graphic. The 500Hz IMU sensor inside the ball allows us to be highly accurate in our analysis.”
