Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo added yet another achievement in his illustrious career as he surpassed Iran's Ali Daei tally of 109 goals in international football. The Portugal captain reached the mark during his team's World Cup Group A qualifying match against Ireland. The historic milestone, which was being looked forward to ever since the start of the competition, came in the 89th minute when the Portuguese forward scored a goal to level the series 1-1. CR7 added another goal six minutes into stoppage time to take his tally of goals to 111 in 180 matches.

While the 36-year-old has taken 180 games to reach the tally of 110 goals, former world record holder Ali Daei had scored 109 goals in 149 appearances for the national side.

"I’m very happy, not only because I beat the record but for the special moments that we had," Ronaldo said after the match. "Two goals at the end of the game is so tough, but I have to appreciate what the team did. We believed until the end," he added.

Ronaldo had earlier missed a penalty

The former Juventus star, had earlier missed an opportunity to reach the landmark as he missed a penalty kick in the 15th minute. Later, Ireland even took the lead in the 45th minute with John Egan finding the back of the nets, however, the Irish dreams were shattered with Ronaldo finding a way to score a brace and take Portugal home.

Recently Ronaldo signed a blockbuster deal that saw him reunite with his former club Manchester United. The star player revealed how he was happy to come back "home" and the role Sir Alex Ferguson played in the transfer.

Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father in football for me: Cristiano

"Well, as you know, I have a fantastic history with this amazing club. I was there at 18 years old and of course I’m so happy to be back home after 12 years. So I’m really glad and looking forward to start my first game," the five-time Ballon d'Or winner told Man United's official website.

"For me, Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father in football for me. He helped me a lot, he taught me many things, and in my opinion of course he had a big role because the relationship that we had, we keep in touch all the time, and he’s an unbelievable person. I really like him a lot and he was the main key for me to be in the position that I am, that I signed for Manchester United," he added.
