India’s one of the top medal contenders for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Mirabai Chanu did not disappoint as the Indian lifted a massive 201kg to bag the gold medal in the Women’s 49kg weightlifting final. The 27-year-old Indian lifted 88kg in the Snatch Round and walked with a lead of 12kg into the Clean and Jerk round. Chanu then lifted 113kg in the C&J round to claim the top position in the final. With this win, the 27-year-old brought home India’s third medal of the day as well as overall. It was also the first gold medal for the country.

Chanu went for a lift of 84kg in her first attempt at the Snatch round which she successfully completed. The 27-year-old then added 4kg to the barbell for her second attempt and successfully lifted it to create her personal best Snatch lift (88kg). Chanu tried to extend her lead by adding 2kg and going for a lift of 90kg but she could not complete it. Nevertheless, the Indian finished the first round with a lift of 88kg (12kg ahead of the second-best lift in the round).

The Indian lifter then needed only one attempt to bag the gold medal as she lifted a whopping 109kg in the first attempt of the Clean and Jerk round. However, Chanu bettered herself as she added 4kg to the barbell and successfully lifted 113kg in the second attempt to create a CWG record. She also went for 115kg in the third attempt but could not lift it.
