Indian pugilist Nitu Ghanghas defeated England’s Demie-Jade Resztan in the Women’s Over 45kg-48kg (Minimumweight) Final on Sunday to win the gold medal. Nitu won the bout with a unanimous decision of 5-0. The Indian boxer dominated her English counterpart in all three rounds and swept away with clean points. All five judges found Nitu better than Demie-Jade and ruled the decision in her favor.

Starting in the first round, a flurry of punches from the Indian felt too much to handle for the English pugilist as she lost a bit of control. Nitu took the benefit of this and approached the game even more aggressively. She ended Round 1 on top and started the second round on a positive note as well.

The two-times gold medalist at Youth Championships then punched her way to glory in the following round and outclassed 2019 world championships bronze medallist Demie-Jade to bring her first major senior medal for herself. It did not feel like this was Nitu's maiden appearance at the Commonwealth Games as the Southpaw continued to dazzle in the ring and threw sharp and accurate combinations of punches and controlled the pace of the contest.

In the semifinal, Nitu had taken down Canadian boxer Priyanka Dhillon while in her quarterfinals bout, the Indian pugilist had defeated Northern Ireland's, Nicole Clyde.

Notably, this was also India's first gold medal in boxing at the 2022 CWG. India has won 15 gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 17 bronze medals so far at the quadrennial event.
