On day two of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025, Weissenhaus event in Germany, Dommaraju Gukesh, the Indian Grandmaster, reached the knockouts despite losing to Norwegian GM Magnus Carlsen in the ninth and final round of the round robin stage. The new world champion Gukesh was facing Carlsen for the first-time after winning the coveted title, but a loss meant that he could only accumulate 3.5 points in the nine rounds of the Weissenhaus event.

During the highly anticipated clash between Dommaraju Gukesh and Magnus Carlsen, fought tooth and nail, but a blunder under time pressure from the Indian GM on move 42nd led to his downfall. The situation allowed Carlsen to paralyse the pieces of Gukesh before the 18-year-old resigned the game, but still he finished in joint seventh place alongside Nodirbek Abdusattorov, to make the quarter-final stage.

After the conclusion of the round robin stage of the Freestyle Chess Grand Tour 2025, Weissenhaus event in Germany, Fabiano Caruana had the chance to pick his opponent for the quarter-final stage, and he chose Dommaraju Gukesh. Meanwhile, Alireza Firouzja picked Vincent Keymer, while Javokhir Sindarov chose Hikaru Nakamura in a massive surprise, which left Magnus Carlsen with Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
