Delhi Capitals have announced that they have parted ways with their assistant coaches Ajit Agarkar and Shane Watson after a dismal performance in the IPL 2023 season. The Delhi-based IPL franchise thanked the duo for their contributions and wished them all the best in their future endeavors.
Agarkar and Watson joined the Delhi Capitals' coaching staff after the IPL 2022 mega auction, where the team had revamped their squad under the leadership of head coach Ricky Ponting. However, the team failed to live up to the expectations and won only five out of 14 matches finishing ninth in the points table, missing out on the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The team suffered from inconsistent batting, poor fielding, and a lack of depth in their bowling department.
The team also missed their regular captain Rishabh Pant, who was ruled out of the entire season due to injuries sustained in a road accident in December 2022. David Warner took over the captaincy duties but could not inspire the team to turn things around.
“You’ll always have a place to call home here. Thank You, Ajit and Watto, for your contributions. All the very best for your future endeavors,” DC tweeted.
Delhi Capitals will now look to make some changes to their support staff and squad ahead of the next IPL season. However, DC co-owner Parth Jindal has confirmed that head coach Ricky Ponting and director of cricket Sourav Ganguly will continue to helm the franchise and guide the players as they look to redeem themselves in IPL 2024.
Agarkar and Watson, meanwhile, will look for new opportunities in their coaching careers. Agarkar, a former India pacer, has been linked with the job of the chief selector for the Indian men's cricket team. Watson, a former Australia all-rounder, has been involved in various T20 leagues around the world as a player and mentor.
