Former Assam cricketer and an advocate Devajit Saikia has been appointed as the new secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday, January 12. Saikia has replaced Jay Shah, who left the position in December 2024 after being appointed as the ICC chairperson. Devajit Saikia has played four First-class matches in his career form 1990 to 1991, amassing 53 runs. He also served as a lawyer in the Guwahati High Court, and also got jobs in the Northern Frontier Railways and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through sports quota.

As the new BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia’s first task was to attend a meeting alongside the board president Roger Binny. As reported by India Today, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir were also present in a meeting with the BCCI President and Secretary where they discussed India’s performance in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under.

Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir engage in lengthy discussion regarding India’s performance in BGT 2024-25

In a meeting with Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, Roger Binny, and the new BCCI secretary on board, the Indian cricket board wanted to understand the reasons for India’s flop show in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Notably, India failed to retain the BGT  for the first time in 10 years, and also missed the chance to win their third consecutive Test series down under. Despite winning the first game, India ended up losing the series by 1-3.

“The meeting was detailed, with lengthy discussions on the team’s performance, especially the batting lineup. Management wanted to understand why Indian batters, despite having a strong lineup, have not been able to perform. They also focused on identifying the core reasons and how to rectify them,” a source was quoted as saying by India Today.
