The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced a 15-member squad for T20 World Cup 2022. There were almost expected names in the squad. While Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Deepak Hooda are the five batters in the team, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and R Ashwin are the three all-rounders who will travel with the team to Australia.
There was a lot of debate on whether Dinesh Karthik will be picked for the wicketkeeper’s role or if will it be Rishabh Pant. The BCCI Selection Committee ended the debate by including both of them in the 15-member squad. While Rishabh Pant was a part of India’s T20 World Cup squad in 2021, Karthik burst into the scenes post-IPL 2022.
The veteran wicketkeeper took the tournament by storm as he amassed runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on almost every occasion and that too at a hefty strike rate. Karthik was rewarded for his performance in IPL with a place in the national team for the home T20I series against South Africa in June. The 37-year-old has been a mainstay for India since then.
And now, Karthik has earned a place in India’s T20 World Cup squad. He will be travelling with the team to Australia for the biennial event. For those unversed, Karthik had dreamt of playing in the T20 World Cup 2022 and it seems his dream has come true. The 37-year-old was elated after getting included in the 15-member squad and shared his feelings. “Dreams do come true,” tweeted Karthik on Monday.
