Former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt has made a shocking claim regarding Hardik Pandya, who is leading the team in the T20I series against New Zealand. While many suggest that he could be the first-choice captain in the T20I format after Rohit Sharma-led team crashed out of the T20 World Cup 2022 following a 10-wicket defeat to England, there hasn't been any official confirmation of the same. Hardik has been named the skipper with Virat Kohli, Rohit and KL Rahul among others handed a break.

While several retired cricketers including Harbhajan Singh have named Hardik Pandya as a strong candidate to succeed Rohit Sharma in the squad, the fact that Hardik led Gujarat Titans to a championship win in the team's very first season in the competition does no harm to his reputation as the skipper. However, Salman Butt believes that in the Asian sub-continent, people often rush to change after one poor result.

"I don't know who is seeing him as captain and who is watching such dreams. He has talent and has tasted success in the IPL. But even Rohit Sharma has been successful five to six times in the IPL. If he had scored well in a couple of matches in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022, people would not have been talking about making this change at the top," Butt said.

"Not all of them, but quite a few probably don't understand how these things work. Sometimes, just to give an opinion, people say, 'change the captain,'" the ex-Pakistan captain added.

While Hardik is leading the T20I side in New Zealand, Shikhar Dhawan has been handed the responsibility of captaining the ODI team.
