With no KL Rahul available for the rescheduled fifth Test against England, Shubman Gill will partner with Rohit Sharma at the top for India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hinted at the opening pair for the only Test on the tour through a post on social media. Notably, India will play England for the fifth Test from 1 July to 5 July.

About the opening pair for India, the BCCI shared a video of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill practicing at the nets with the caption “#TeamIndia openers captain @rohitsharma45 and @shubmangill are getting into the groove on Day 1 of our nets session”, clearing the air around who will replace KL Rahul as India’s second opener. Notably, KL Rahul was ruled out of the entire England tour with a groin injury and no replacement in the squad was announced.

India’s squad for the rescheduled fifth Test vs England: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Srikar Bharat (wk)

India on verge of creating history

Now coming to this rescheduled fifth Test, India will take the field against England with an aim to script history. As the Rohit Sharma-led team is leading the 5-match series from 2021, 2-1, they are the favorites to win it. If India manage to beat England in this fifth Test, they will win a Test series in England after 14 long years (having the last won in 2007). However, the job will not be easy with England looking in ominous form.

With a change in the leadership group, the Three Lions look like a more dangerous side as compared to what India faced last year. The coach-captain pair of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes is working wonders for England as they recently beat champions New Zealand 2-0 with one match still to be played.
