England's forward for Women's Super League, Lauren James, is doubtful in regards to her availability for Sunday's UEFA Women's Euro 2025 final against Spain. However, she was involved in the final training session ahead of the big match. During the semi-final match against Italy, she was forced to leave the field due to an ankle injury. She was spotted icing her ankle, while seated in the dugout for the rest of the match which saw England secured a 2-1 victory. The 23-year-old scored two goals during the tournament in Switzerland, playing a key role in helping England advance to the final against the world champions, Spain.
England manager Sarina Wiegman has confirmed, while speaking to BBC, "She's (Lauren James) still recovering. She's doing things on the pitch, and we have two more days, so we're going to give her time. I don't know yet, but that's what we're going to go for 23 players available for the game on Sunday." If James fails to recover, England would go ahead to choose between Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly. Both players played a key role in rescuing England against Sweden and Italy during the quarter-finals and semi-finals.
Sarina Wiegman prefers multiple players for significant contributions towards the game
Coach Wiegman noted that choosing the right lineup depends on the opponent and determining which setup would be most effective from the outset. She is quite keen to have several players who can make a strong impact off the bench, giving her greater tactical flexibility. "It's a nice one [problem] to have, but you mention those two [Kelly and Agyemang] because they have been coming on and scoring goals. But I think Grace Clinton has also made a great contribution - she had to play in Keira's position when Keira had to come out, a very important position," she said.
Although teenage forward Agyemang has yet to start a senior match for her country, her impressive contributions off the bench have made her increasingly difficult to overlook. Meanwhile, all 23 players in Wiegman’s squad took part in training at Sportanlage Au on Saturday, including Lauren James. England will now head to Basel to face reigning world champions Spain for the title clash at the St Jakob-Park.
