Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali opened up on talks regarding the impact Lewis Hamilton’s retirement will have on the sport. Hamilton on Saturday clinched his 100th pole position ahead of Spanish Grand Prix.
Domenicali clarified that the star racer currently has a one-year contract with Mercedes, with expectations from him continuing to be higher. Domenicali spoke that even if he doesn’t complete the term and announces his retirement, it won’t have a negative impact on F1. “F1 is solid, robust, and whatever Lewis’ decision will be, F1 will react and move forward,” Stefano mentioned. He assured the Wall Street analysts over a virtual conference that they will respect Lewis’ decision, and F1 as a sport is solid and strong and his retirement won’t impact the sport negatively, despite his importance and performance over the years.
Lewis is boosted towards winning eight titles and creating history in F1: Domenicali
The F1 CEO heaped praise for seven-time title winner and called Lewis a ‘great asset’ to the sport. Domenicali credited Lewis for growing F1 in other areas which were not directly related to the sport. He further mentioned that F1 in itself is strong, and drivers are always in a place where one day they may retire. “He is fully boosted to make sure that he’ll be the only driver that is going to win eight titles in the history of F1,” outlined Domenicali, emphasizing that Lewis is currently focused on the ongoing season and wants to create history in F1.
