FC Goa have confirmed the right knee injury to their star defender Sandesh Jhingan, which happened during India’s disappointing campaign at the AFC Asian Cup. The ISL club revealed that he underwent a “thorough series of examinations,” and as per their initial indications, “a period of rest from competitive play will be necessary for his complete recovery.”
Sandesh Jhingan picked up the right knee during the early stages of the second half when India took on Syria in their third and final Group B match in the AFC Asian Cup. He limped off the field in the 47th minute at the Al-Bayt Stadium in Al-Khor, getting replaced by Nikhil Poojary.
The statement from the ISL club on their official X account about the injury to their star defender read, “FC Goa regret to announce that defender Sandesh Jhingan has suffered an injury to his right knee while on duty with the senior Indian National Men’s team in the AFC Asian Cup 2023. Following the injury, Sandesh has undergone a thorough series of examinations and the initial indications suggest a period of rest from competitive play will be necessary for his complete recovery.”
“@SandeshJhingan and the Club are truly grateful for the outpouring of concern and well-wishes from the fans, and updates on his progress will be provided in due course,” the statement from FC Goa concluded.
The second phase of the ISL is set to resume on January 31, when Jamshedpur FC host NorthEast United at home. The first match after the international break for FC Goa, who are two points behind the table-toppers Kerala Blasters with two matches in hand, will take on the winless Hyderabad FC away from home, on February 1.
