Fiorentina have officially confirmed that Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea will remain at the club for another season, with the club exercising the option to extend his contract until June 2026. The former Manchester United shot-stopper, who joined the Italian side in August 2024 on a free transfer, has played a pivotal role in Fiorentina’s resurgence this season, prompting the club to secure his services for an additional year. De Gea’s arrival in Florence marked the end of a long spell away from football, following his departure from Manchester United in the summer of 2023.
Despite spending a year without a club and taking a significant pay cut from his previous Premier League wages, the Spanish veteran has embraced his new challenge in Serie A with remarkable professionalism. His performances between the sticks have been crucial, particularly in high-pressure fixtures. A standout moment came against AC Milan, where De Gea saved two penalties in a dramatic 2-1 victory, instantly endearing himself to the Viola faithful.
His contribution goes beyond just his saves: Fiorentino President delighted over De Gea’s contract extension
Reports indicate that De Gea's initial salary of approximately €1.2 million per season will be doubled as part of the extension deal. Fiorentina are also reportedly considering discussions for an even longer-term commitment, given De Gea’s consistent performances and the leadership he brings to the squad. His composure, shot-stopping ability, and wealth of experience have not only solidified Fiorentina’s defence but also inspired confidence throughout the team.
Club President Rocco Commisso expressed his delight over retaining the Spaniard, stating, “David has been exceptional for us this season. He’s shown incredible character and quality, and we are thrilled that he will stay with us also next season. His contribution goes beyond just his saves; he’s a leader in the dressing room and a role model for our younger players.”
