During the second Test of the Ashes 2023 at Lord’s in London, when Alex Carey lobbed the ball underarm to find Jonny Bairstow out of his crease off the bowling of Cameron Green, the captain of Australia, Pat Cummins, appealed to the third umpire and the batter was controversially given out stumping. The dismissal, which was legal, according to the MCC rules, led to the claims from England players that it wasn’t in the “Spirit of the game,” and the debate on it, still rages on to this day whenever these two countries play against each other.
