Former American legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather, who hung up his gloves seven years ago, is set to return to the professional boxing arena in order to appear in a rematch of his highly controversial game against Victor Ortiz on August 24, 2024, at Mexico City’s Plaza de Toros Mexico.
That original game, which took place in 2011 for Ortiz’s WBC welterweight title, was surrounded by controversies for many years due to the poor tactics that were used by the Mexican-American boxer which included headbutting the legendary boxer up against the ropes, eventually leading to the immediate point deduction by the referee.
The 47-year-old was running high in the contest with an unfurling range of his punches and kicks on his 37-year-old counterpart. This led to Ortiz opting for dirty play and the game was interrupted for a brief period by referee Joe Cortez. Ortiz was apologetic for his act and immediately went to his 10-year-old opposition and embraced him with hugs and kisses.
After the calmness of the moment, Mayweather sensed the right time to knock out his opposition as he landed a ferocious left hook-straight right combination to tumble Ortiz to the canvas. Now, 13 years after an argument with broadcaster Larry Merchant, it is expected that the duo are set to clash in an exhibition rematch of that controversial game.
