Former Indian midfielder, a gold medallist of 2001 Junior Hockey World Cup, 2003 Asia Cup and a silver medallist of Asian Games 2002, Bimal Lakra was admitted to a hospital in Ranchi in a very serious condition. The 45-year-old former player lost consciousness while working in the field in his village of Simdega division of Jharkhand, as a result of which he also suffered a head injury. Initially he was taken to a hospital in Simdega but then he was referred to Ranchi from there.

The doctor treating him says that he was brought in a very serious condition but now he is a slightly better condition than yesterday. The doctor further said, “We performed a CT scan, which showed an injury in the frontal region on the left side of the brain.There was a clotting, so we admitted him to the ICU. We repeated the CT scan today, and some additional clotting was observed in other parts of the brain. For now, surgery is not required, and that’s good news. We have kept him under constant monitoring in the Critical Care Unit."

Former players seeks government intervention

Lakra’s friend and former captain of the Indian hockey team Viren Rasquinha gave an update about Lakra. In a post on X he wrote that requested the government to take care of him as he is unemployed. Rasquinha wrote, “My friend and teammate in the Indian Hockey team Bimal Lakra is in hospital in Ranchi in a very serious condition. He served the nation for many years. Hope the government takes care of him now. He has no job at the moment.

Jharkhand’s sports minister Sudivya Sonu also visited the hospital to take an update on Lakra’s health and to know how his treatment is going on. Former captain Rasquinha gave an update regarding this from his social media platform X’s post. He wrote, “Very good update by Bholenath ji of @TheHockeyIndia and Govt. Of Jharkhand. Thankfully Bimal Lakra seems to be getting the best treatment and support.” According to the reports, siblings Birendra Lakra Sr. and Asunta also donned India jerseys in the men’s and women’s categories respectively.
