Alex de Minaur defeated Daniil Medvedev in the French Open 2024 men’s singles fourth round on Monday, June 3. De Minaur took down his fifth-seeded rival with the score-line of 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 in a 2 hour and 49-minute long battle to make his way to the quarterfinals stage. Medvedev had a brilliant start to the game, but as the day progressed, the Russian seemed to have lost his way completely.
While he was at 3-3 in the fourth set, Medvedev gave a breakpoint and it was the point he seemingly lost control of the game and failed to recover. As de Minaur made his way to the quarterfinals of the Roland Garros, he became the first Australian in 20 years to do so. Before him, Lleyton Hewitt had qualified for the quarters of the clay-court major in 2004.
Notably, de Minaur has been in fantastic form this year, and this happened to be his fifth win against a top-10 opponent this year, which is the joint-most by any player. With this, he equalled the win tally of Grigor Dimitrov and Jannik Sinner’s win records. This will be his second Grand Slam quarter-final after he made it to the same stage at the 2020 US Open.
In the next game, the 25-year-old will take on either fourth-seed Alexander Zverev or 13th-seed Holger Rune. For this season, the Australian currently stands at 29-10, which includes winning his eighth ATP Tour title in Acapulco.
