The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier this month, opened applications for the post of Team India Head Coach role with Rahul Dravid ’s tenure coming to an end with the T20 World Cup 2024. The former Indian cricketer turned coach’s tenure will end with India’s campaign at the biennial tournament, set to be played in the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies.

Seeing this, the BCCI has opened the applications ahead of the marquee tournament, with the deadline day set to be Monday, May 27 for the applicants. But as per reports citing The Indian Express, the BCCI has received over 3000 fake applications. The Indian board has received applications from fake names, including former cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag and even politicians.

“Last year too, the BCCI received such a response where impostors applied and the story is similar this time. The reason the BCCI had to invite applications on Google Forms is it’s easy to scrutinize the names of applicants in one sheet,” a BCCI official said as quoted by The Indian Express.

It is to be noted that this is not the first time that the BCCI has faced such a situation. In 2022, the BCCI has invited applications for the post of the head coach and they received over 5000 applications from impostors which used celebrity names. But it was via mail they received these applications and in 2024, they opted to get the applications on Google Forms.

New India Head Coach to serve till 2027 ODI World Cup, confirms BCCI

The BCCI, when they opened the applications for the Team India men’s senior team head coach role on May 13, they clarified that the person will be serving as the coach across formats till the 2027 World Cup, which will be played in the 50-over format.

In their official statement, the BCCI had stated that the candidate “must be willing to meet work expectations and pressures associated with handling marquee athletes.” Moreover, it further added that they should help in “developing a world-class Indian cricket team which delivers sustained success in all conditions and formats, inspiring current and future generations of cricketers and stakeholders with their approach to the game.”
