Wrestler Geeta Phogat claimed on Thursday that she and her husband Pawan Saroha have been arrested by Delhi Police. This move comes after Geeta tried entering the wrestler's protest at Jantar Mantar but she was stopped and arrested by the Delhi Police. Prominent Indian wrestlers are currently protesting against WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment, alleging that no action has been taken against him.
“Me and my husband Pawan Saroha have been arrested by the Delhi Police. Very sad,” Geeta said in one of her multiple tweets. Delhi Police, however later addressed stating that Geeta Phogat was not arrested but taken into “preventive custody”. The wrestler then tweeted about her clash with the police as she tried to enter Jantar Mantar. “The arbitrariness of Delhi Police. I was also stopped from visiting my siblings at Jantar Mantar. The police is saying that there are only two ways, either go back to your home or go to the police station. This is highly condemnable,” Geeta Phogat posted on Twitter.
Recently the wrestlers also accused the policemen of being drunk and under influence but the officials have denied that accusation. Videos of the fights outside Jantar Mantar have been doing rounds on social media.
The Supreme Court of India closed proceedings on a plea that sought an FIR against Brij Bhushan Singh. The protesting wrestlers on Thursday said that their stir would continue at Jantar Mantar until the WFI Chief was arrested. The protesters have welcomed the apex court’s decision to close the proceedings on the plea by three women wrestlers, who have leveled sexual harassment allegations against WFI Chief Singh.
