India lost the second ODI by 5 runs to Bangladesh as the Men in Blue failed to chase 272 runs in their designated 50 overs. India lost both of their openers (Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan) within the first three overs and then kept losing wickets at regular intervals to fall short of the target. The margin of the loss would have been bigger had Rohit Sharma not played a gem of a knock.

Sharma, who walked off the field early in the match after injuring his thumb while attempting for a catch, came to bat at no. 9 for India. The team needed 65 runs off 42 balls when Rohit walked out to bat. The Indian captain had to bat with the tailenders and Bangladesh bowlers were firing on all cylinders. As much as Rohit was trying to take the strike, he had to watch his partners getting dismissed one after the other.

But on the limited occasion Rohit got the strike till the 46th over, he pounced on it. The Indian captain finally broke the shackles on the last four deliveries of the 46th over as he hit two sixes and a four against Ebadot Hossain. Meanwhile, Mahmudullah bowled beautifully to keep Rohit pondering. As a result, Mohammed Siraj took the strike against Mustafizur Rahman. The left-arm pacer made the most of this chance as he sneaked in a maiden over.

This left India needing 40 runs off 12 balls. Rohit started the 49th over with a maximum. The batter got two reprieves and India eventually got 20 runs from the over. India now needed 20 off the last over and Mustafizur Rahman was handed the responsibility. Rohit managed a couple of boundaries and a six but he could not launch the last ball for a maximum. As a result, Bangladesh won the match by 5 runs.

Rohit was gutted, having failed to finish the game for his team and also lost the series. But the Indian cricket team fans were looking at the Indian captain with their chests puffed. Rohit had set an example as he batted with an injured thumb. Sharma not only batted but made a win look possible. This heroic stuff from Sharma earned him a lot of praise and respect from the fans.
