Time changes and there are enough pieces of evidence to prove this. While a month ago, Virat Kohli’s place in India’s T20I squad was being questioned, people now want him to open the innings for India at the T20 World Cup alongside Rohit Sharma. The reason is that Kohli scored his 71st century while opening the innings for India against Afghanistan at the Asia Cup 2022.

Many cricket experts have said that Kohli opening the innings for India will benefit the team. Virat Kohli himself once said that he likes to bat at the top. However, Gautam Gambhir feels all of this is nonsense as he gave his verdict. The former India cricketer said that Virat Kohli cannot open the innings for India till Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are available. Gambhir further stated that Kohli should continue to bat at No.3 or can also demote himself to No.4 according to the match situation.

“Don’t start this nonsense about him (Kohli) opening the batting. He can’t open the batting with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma (available). I even said on air that there shouldn’t even be a debate about this. I will always be flexible about No. 3. If the openers bat out 10 overs, then I will have Suryakumar Yadav at No.3. If an early wicket falls then Kohli,” said Gambhir on Star Sports show ‘Game Plan’.

It’s worth mentioning that whenever Virat Kohli has opened the innings for India in T20Is, he has scored runs. Kohli has scored 400 runs in nine matches at an average of 57.14. His strike rate also booms up to 162.6. Kohli has scored six centuries while opening the innings in T20 cricket.

But, for India, there is KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma who have been doing it for a significant time. Plus, Kohli batting at No.3 gives a lot of stability to the team as he bats through the middle overs.
