Shubman Gill in a very short span of his ODI career has managed to score 1917 runs from just 35 innings at an impressive average of 66.1. Gill has been the best batter in this format for the last year and notably, his consistency has earned him a place in the ODI XI, since the start of this calendar year (2023) and here in this article, we will see how his career has panned out so far.
Shubman Gill made his ODI debut against New Zealand in January 2019 where he batted at the number 3 position since skipper Kohli decided to rest himself in the last two ODIs of the five-match series (after winning the series by a 3-0 margin). Gill in those two ODI matches managed to score only 16 runs with the bat.
Shubman Gill later played the third ODI match of his career during the Australia tour in 2020 where he got a chance to open alongside Shikhar Dhawan in a dead rubber game and managed to score 33 runs in that game.
Shubman Gill played many ODI matches in 2022 as the first-choice players of Team India were heavily concentrating on playing only in the T20I format in that calendar year. Shubman Gill toured the West Indies, toured Zimbabwe, and made a mark for himself by scoring 64, 43, & 98* at Port of Spain, and in the next series, he scored 82*, 33 & 130 with the bat at Harare respectively.
Shubman Gill in his first six ODI innings of 2022 registered three fifties and one century. Shubman Gill also played a three-match home ODI series against South Africa which happened just before the T20 World Cup 2022. Later he played another three-match ODI series under Dhawan's captaincy against New Zealand where he managed to score 50, 45* & 13 runs respectively.
Shubman Gill has scored 638 runs from just 12 ODI innings at an average of 70.88 in the calendar year (2022). Shubman Gill kept knocking on the doors by consistently scoring runs with the bat and hence in January 2023, he went on to become the permanent opening batsman of the Indian team in ODIs alongside skipper Rohit Sharma.
Shubman Gill has been the first batsman to score 1000-plus ODI runs in 2023 and notably, so far he has been the only batsman to smash four ODI centuries in this calendar year (2023).
Shubman Gill recorded a century against Sri Lanka at Thiruvananthapuram and also he recorded a double hundred against New Zealand at Hyderabad in January 2023 ensuring that selecting him over the experienced left-hand batter Shikhar Dhawan was the right decision.
