The world’s biggest sporting event, the FIFA World Cup 2022, is just one day away and football fans around the world are extremely excited about this marquee tournament. With this being the biggest sporting spectacle in the world, the prize money for the winners is equally rewarding. 


FIFA, ahead of the opening game between Qatar and Ecuador, shared the distribution of the prize money for each team participating in the tournament. As mentioned in the FIFA Annual Report 2020, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 prize money will amount to USD 440 million.


Here is the full breakdown of prize money for the  FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar:


• Champions: USD 42 million (INR 344 cr)

• Runners-up: USD 30 million (INR 245 cr)

• Third place: USD 27 million (INR 220 cr)

• Fourth place: USD 25 million (INR 204 cr)

• 5th-8th place: USD 68 million (INR 138 cr)*

• 9th-16th place: USD 104 million (INR 106 cr)*

• 17th-32nd place: USD 144 million (INR 74 cr)*


*Divided equally among the teams


In addition, each qualified team will receive USD 1.5 million ahead of the competition to cover preparation costs.


Along with announcing the prize money for the World Cup, FIFA also talked about the important organisational aspects of the tournament and provided teams with important information regarding the teams’ practice and stay in Qatar. The announcement also included information about matters such as security, human rights, transport and the Team Base Camps.


“You, your teams and your coaches are the actors and it is our job to create the stage for the greatest FIFA World Cup ever,” the FIFA President said. “The conditions are the best in terms of the climate in November and December, the players will be in peak form in the first third of the season, there will be no [long-distance] travel and there are state-of-the-art stadiums and training facilities.”
