I felt I could play World Cup 2022: Venkatesh Iyer on missing a place in India’s World Cup squad

Updated -

The Men in Blue have started fresh ahead of the next T20 World Cup assignment. Although, the next edition of the marquee event is far away right now, but the teams have already started to look into the best possible combinations to make the most in the tournament. Team India is definitely one of them.

After the snub of National Selection Committee and with new appointees joining in soon, there are reports of the BCCI going forward with split captaincy too. Talking about split captaincy, Hardik Pandya is the key contender to take the charge of the Men in Blue in the shortest format.

While the star all-rounder made a return to cricket, taking his franchise Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL win on their debut season, a lot of eyes now stand hooked on the young player leading the side in the next World Cup edition.

One more star among them is Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer. After Pandya’s return, Iyer was removed from India’s scheme of things. After receiving India call-up, Iyer had hopes of being named in the World Cup squad but has now opened up after missing a place in the 15-member squad.

“When I was called into the Indian cricket team, I felt I could play in the World Cup and then I was not there. That really hurt me”, he said. “If things are to happen, they will happen. The only thing in my hands is to stick to the process, get better every day and leave the rest to god”, the KKR player further added.

The all-rounder has been retained alongside Shreyas Iyer (C), Nitish Rana, Umesh Yadav, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakravarthy, Anukul Roy and Rinku Singh. Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Tim Southee are other three players retained by the Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2023 mini-auction.
