Brazilian winger Raphinha has revealed that he came close to representing Italy at Euro 2020, in a decision that could have drastically altered his international career. In a recent interview with journalist Isabela Pagliari, the Barcelona star confessed that he was “basically set to go” with the Azzurri squad for the tournament they eventually won. The only obstacle was the delay in processing his Italian passport. “Luckily, my passport didn’t come through in time,” Raphinha said, acknowledging the twist of fate that prevented him from playing for Italy.
According to Raphinha, the Italian national team made a significant push to secure his allegiance. Midfielder Jorginho frequently called him, and the Italian coaching staff laid out a compelling long-term plan for his role within the squad. "The project they had for me was amazing, and it really caught my eye,” he admitted. Despite the tempting offer and the potential of winning the Euro, the winger admitted he still held onto a small hope of representing Brazil. That one percent chance became a reality when the passport delay shut the door on Italy and opened another with the Selecao.
Raphinha faces stern test in Barca’s upcoming fixture against Inter Milan
Now a key figure at FC Barcelona, Raphinha has built on that international momentum with a strong club season. Despite early inconsistencies and injury setbacks, the 28-year-old has found his rhythm under Hansi Flick, delivering crucial assists and timely goals. His pace, creativity, and ability to stretch defences have made him one of the more dynamic attackers in La Liga this season. With a renewed sense of confidence and fitness, Raphinha has been instrumental in Barcelona’s push to finish the season on a high note.
Barcelona’s next major test comes against Inter Milan in the Champions League, a critical fixture as both sides aim to advance to the next round. The Italian giants will offer a stern challenge, but with Raphinha in top form and leading the charge alongside young talents like Lamine Yamal and Pedri, Barcelona will be hopeful of asserting themselves at the San Siro.
