During his latest appearance on “Dressing Room” show for a Pakistan TV channel, Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian captain, refused to compare eras when he was asked about drawing comparisons between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. The 75-year-old was categoric in his statement, calling the aforementioned comparison “a weakness, if I might call it a weakness, amongst the subcontinent” people, while stating that it’s difficult to compare people.
Notably, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli are widely regarded as two of the greatest players of their generation, and fortunately for the cricket community, these two played with each other for a few years in the Indian colours. With that, the fans have often given their take on which of the two is the best among the best, and while many have an inclination of such kind for Sachin Tendulkar, the fandom for Virat Kohli isn’t far behind if it hasn’t taken over already.

I will never compare eras because playing conditions are different: Sunil Gavaskar
But, when the host of the “Dressing Room” show asked Sunil Gavaskar about which batter between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli is the best, he didn’t want to give an answer. The original Master Blaster was quoted as saying, as per the Times of India, “I will never compare eras because, you know, playing conditions are different, the pitches are different, the opposition is different. So it is very difficult to compare people. But that is only a weakness, if I might call it a weakness, amongst the subcontinent - our comparisons.”
Sunil Gavaskar also stated that comparison among top players of different eras doesn’t happen in countries except the subcontinental ones. He remarked, “We will always compare players. Have you ever seen anybody asking 'is Ricky Ponting a better player than Gregg Chappell?'...Nobody. Just accept the current players as they are. There is no comparison. It only happens in the subcontinent. We are all the time comparing.”
