The Indian team claimed the number one spot in the ICC ODI rankings with a win over Australia in the first match of a three-game series. After becoming number one in ODIs, the Men in Blue now are the highest-ranked team across all three formats in men's cricket.
Coming back to the match, KL Rahul won the toss and invited Australia to bat first. The Aussies got off to a horrendous start with Mitchell Marsh's wicket on the fourth ball of the inning. But the Aussies studied the ship with a massive partnership between David Warner and Steven Smith. But Mohammed Shami, who dismissed Marsh, took charge with the ball and cleaned up Smith to get India back in the game.
Shami continued picking wickets as he ended up with a five-wicket haul as Australian batters failed to score freely after the Warner-Smith partnership. Josh Inglis also batted well for his 45 as Australia posted a decent 276-run total.
In the second innings, fans in Mohali were presented a glimpse of the future with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill posting a magical 142-run with both batters scoring fluent seventies. But after the openers departed and India lost two more quick wickets, Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav carried India out of the mini-collapse.
SKY departed with a crucial 50-run knock as KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja finished off the game comfortably to give the Men in Blue a five-wicket win.
