India’s chess Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi stunned five-time world champion, Magnus Carlsen in a Pro Chess League encounter on Tuesday. Gujrathi, who was playing for Indian Yogis, defeated Carlsen, who was representing Canada Chess Brahs. 

The Yogis clutched up a 4-0 final-round win over the Canada Chessbrahs where Gujrathi overcame Carlsen after the latter missed a checkmate in three.

“We fought very hard, and I think the cherry on top for me was for sure to defeat Magnus”,  Vidit said after the game.

With this win, Vidit becomes the fourth Indian to beat the reigning world champion. Before Vidit,  R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh, and Arjun Erigaisi were the only Indians to have beaten Carlsen.

The online tournament  features 16 teams in a rapid chess event with an impressive $150,000 prize money.
