The ninth edition of the Indian Super League will kick off on October 7 (Friday), with last season's runner-up Kerala Blasters hosting East Bengal in Kochi. After the COVID pandemic restricted the tournament inside bio-bubble, the 2022-23 season of ISL will be back in a home-and-away format. Hyderabad FC lifted the prestigious trophy, while Jamshedpur FC clinched the League Shield.
The upcoming season of the tournament will bring a lot of new rules as earlier top four teams used to qualify for the playoffs, but the fresh season of ISL will include the eliminator matches to decide the semi-finalists. The top-two teams directly qualify for the semi-finals, but the third-placed side will take on the sixth-place team and the fourth-place club will face the fifth-paced side to decide the remaining two semi-finalists.
The winner of Elimination 1 (3rd vs 6th) will clash with the first-placed side in the semi-finals, while the second-placed team will face the winner of Eliminator 2 (4th vs 5th). The semi-finals will be a two-legged affair, and the winners will face each other in the final. Each ISL club will be allowed to register a minimum of 25 players and a maximum of 35 players, including six overseas players.
