India's Gulveer Singh makes history by breaking the men's indoor 3000m national record at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational 2025 athletics event in Massachusetts, United States, on Friday. The 26-year-old athlete completed the race in just seven minutes and 38.26 seconds at the Boston University Track and Tennis Centre. Gulveer broke Surender Singh's 17-year-old indoor record (7:49.47) from 2008 by just 11 seconds. The effort also beat India's outdoor 3000m national record of 7:50.31 set by Surendra Singh in England in 2008.
Gulveer Singh ran a 3000m short track race for the first time after a year. He competed in the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran on February 19, 2024, helping him finish in first place. However, his win was short-lived because he got discounted from the race due to lane violation. Further, he came third in the Asian Games and the Asian Championship in different races. Moreover, in the recent race in the USA, Gulveer was just behind Romain Legendre, who ran 7:36.28 seconds.
Gulveer Singh hosts a series of national records besides the 3000m win
This is not the first-time that Gulveer registered a national record in the 3000m race; he also holds the national record for outdoor races in 5000m and 10000m. He won the 5000m in Japan last year in 13:11.82. Last November, Gulveer ran 27:14.88 in the men's 10000m at a meet in Japan. Gulveer also won the 10000m bronze medal at the Asian Games in 2023 with a then-personal best time of 28:17.21 and the 5000m bronze at the Asian Championships in 13:48.33.
It is worth noting that all national records are ratified by the official Athletics Federation of India (AFI). Romain Legendre, from France, won the event in 7:36.28 after competing in 13 heats with over 200 other participants. Morgan Beadlescomb, from the United States, finished in third place in 7:38.55. Meanwhile, India's Rahul completed the event in 8:08.27, placing 112th.
Grant Fisher of the United States holds the world record in the 3000m indoor race, with a time of 7:22.91. Grant, a bronze medalist at Paris 2024, set the record earlier this month in New York.
