After the ICC World Test Championship final went New Zealand’s way, the captaincy debate with regards to the Indian men’s cricket team has yet again reignited. And now former England spinner Monty Panesar has also weighed in on the issue, saying that Rohit Sharma should be made the captain of the T20 side.

Notably, the split captaincy debate has been going on for a long time. While countries like England, Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have more than one national captains, India, Pakistan and New Zealand have the same captain across formats.

In the Indian context, Virat boasts of a phenomenal record overall, especially in bilateral cricket competitions. However, under his captaincy, the team has failed to achieve success in ICC tournaments often being completely outplayed by the opposition during a knockout game. This contrasts with Rohit’s brilliance as a skipper having led the Mumbai Indians to as many as five titles.

“Well I think T20 captaincy probably should be given to Rohit Sharma, he does really well for Mumbai Indians,” Panesar said while speaking to CricBouncer.

“You know Virat Kohli is under pressure here because if his team doesn’t perform in the five-match series against England and loses ICC T20 World Cup 2021 then you know what will happen,” he added.

England don't have Kyle Jamieson, India will always be in the game: Panesar

Meanwhile, Panesar added that the forthcoming Test series against England will not be as threatening for India as the hosts do not have somebody like Kyle Jamieson who proved to be the difference between the two teams in the final.

“I think against England, it will be less threatening because they don’t have like the Kyle Jamieson, so plus England’s top-order batting isn’t as strong. So, I think India probably will always be in the game,” Panesar said.
