The Sunrisers Hyderabad are a franchise cricket team based in Hyderabad that participates in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise is owned by Kalanithi Maran of the SUN Group and was founded in 2012 after the Hyderabad-based Deccan Chargers were terminated by the IPL. The team is currently captained by Kane Williamson with Tom Moody as their head coach. Their primary home ground is the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad, which has a capacity of 55,000. However, amid the pandemic, it looks unlikely that their home matches will be staged in Hyderabad- with the organisers looking at a single-state to stage IPL games to avoid travelling.
About the franchise:
Sunrisers Hyderabad replaced the Deccan Chargers in 2012 and debuted in 2013. The franchise was taken over by Sun TV Network after the Deccan Chronicle went bankrupt. The squad was announced in Chennai on 18 December 2012. The team is owned by Sun TV Network who won the bid with ₹85.05 crore (US$11 million) per year for a five-year deal, a week after the Chargers were terminated due to prolonged financial issues. David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker respectively for the Orange Army.
Team's history:
The team made their first IPL appearance in 2013, where they reached the playoffs, eventually finishing in fourth place. The Sunrisers won their maiden IPL title in the 2016 season, defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 8 runs in the final. The team has qualified for the play-off stage of the tournament in every season since 2016 making them rack up more wins than the all celebrated RCB. In 2018, the team reached the finals of the Indian Premier League but lost to Chennai Super Kings. However, IPL 2021 was a disaster for them as they finished at the bottom of the table with just 3 wins in 14 games.
Team's Owner:
The franchise is owned by Kalanithi Maran of the SUN Group.
Team's skipper:
Kumar Sangakkara and Cameron White led the team in the first season for SRH after which the captaincy was passed on to Shikhar Dhawan for a year. Then Darren Sammy led the team followed by David Warner, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kane Williamson. The New Zealand skipper is likely to continue leading the this year.
