The Indian Super League 2022-23 is nearing its business end and in one such rare moment, the Kerala Blasters side walked off the pitch during the Eliminator match against Bengaluru FC on Friday (3 March). The match went into extra time, with all going well on the ground.

But things turned upside down when Bengaluru FC skipper Sunil Chhteri put the ball at the back of the net from a free kick. This took place at the 95th minute of the extra time when Chhetri was fouled just outside the box of Kerala Blasters and he decided to take it.

The on-field referee allowed the goal and shocking everyone, including the Kerala Blasters players. Replays showed that John allowed Chhetri but he failed to blow the whistle or put a vanishing spray.

The goal saw Kerala Blasters coach Ivan Vukomanovic enter the field of play and call his players back.

Sunil Chhetri opens up after his controversial goal

The Bengaluru FC player opened up on this controversial moment in the post-match interaction. “Referee (Crystal John) told he didn’t need a whistle to be blown or player wall, I asked him if he was sure and he said “Yes”. Guess Luna heard it and that’s why he tried blocking once. This is not the right way to do it (on KBFC walking off).”
