Lewis Hamilton has been one of the pillars of Mercedes over the years winning seven titles including four in a row from 2017 to 2020 since joining in 2013. The seven-time champion will be out of contract at the end of the season and there have been several rumors surrounding his future with no new long-term deal yet agreed. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has finally opened up on the update of Lewis Hamilton’s contract details.
"It is going to happen soon, and we are talking more days than weeks," Wolff told CNBC's Squawk on the Street program in New York when asked about Hamilton's contract negotiations. He continued, "We are trying hard [to get it done before the Canadian Grand Prix]. I will see him today and maybe we will talk about it.”
The 38-year-old British driver has several times asserted that he wants to continue racing as long as he enjoys it and feels motivated. Although Mercedes and Hamilton are currently chasing Red Bull at the top, the driver has said that he is "enjoying" being the hunter for the short term.
Wolff went on to highlight Hamilton’s importance to the team and the league and showered praise on the driver. He further added that they will have to work hard to close the gap with Red Bull.
