Portuguese player Joao Mario has issued a clarification regarding the viral video of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes where the duo were seeming unhappy. The rift between the pair was set to be caused by the aftermath of CR7’s controversial interview with Piers Morgan.
The short clip shows an awkward exchange with the Manchester United pair, where Fernandes enters the Portugal dressing room ahead of training. This was reportedly the first time both have met since the explosive interview surfaced this week.
But Benfica midfielder Mario expressed that there was no problem between the pair, in comparison to the reaction of social media to the video. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Mario said, “It was a joke between them because Bruno was one of the last to arrive and Cristiano asked if he had come by boat. It was a joke between them, they play together.”
In the interview, Ronaldo stated that he has no respect for current Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag as the Dutchman also doesn’t respect him. He said, “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me," he said with regards to Ten Hag. "If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you.”
Later in the interview, Ronaldo also called out the club for its poor facilities which as per the striker haven’t changed since his exit in 2009.
Manchester United soon released a statement on the club's official website, assuring fans that they will take care of the issue and continue focusing on the remaining part of the season.
The statement said: "Manchester United notes the media coverage regarding an interview by Cristiano Ronaldo. The club will consider its response after the full facts have been established. Our focus remains on preparing for the second half of the season and continuing the momentum, belief and togetherness being built among the players, manager, staff, and fans."
