The son of legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, Rohan Gavaskar, has hit back at a fake statement that was circulated in the name of his father on social media. The viral statement claimed that Sunil Gavaskar had thrown shade at the BCCI for its role in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 schedule, which has been affected by political tensions between India and Pakistan.

The fake statement, which was posted by @hi__hassan, an X user from Pakistan, said that Sunil Gavaskar had criticised the nation’s board on NDTV, The user further appreciated Gavaskar for his statement on national television.  Rohan took notice of the post and discredited it by calling it fabricated.

“Sunil Gavaskar on NDTV: It should be a matter of utter shame for us as Indians for politicizing, ruining and basically hijacking this beautiful game of cricket. BCCI has let India down, and tonight’s results are a testimony of it,” the viral statement read.

Rohan Gavaskar, a former Indian cricketer, took to Twitter to expose the fabricated statement and called it 'ridiculous'. The commentator also pointed out that his father was under contract with India Today and would not speak to NDTV anyway.

Rohan issued a clarification by writing, “This is a completely fabricated statement attributed to my father. He hasn’t made this statement, and someone is just trying to create mischief. It’s absolutely ridiculous that people would use his name to get more engagement. Please retweet so that the truth prevails.”

He further wrote: “He is under contract with India today, so he wouldn’t speak to Ndtv anyway !”

The Asia Cup 2023 has had its fair share of controversy because of the strained relations between India and Pakistan. BCCI had refused to send its team to Pakistan, where four matches were scheduled to be held. Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had then decided to adopt a hybrid model where India's matches would be played in Sri Lanka and the rest in Pakistan, which the PCB had agreed to.
