Orlando Magic second-year guard Jalen Suggs has suffered a left knee capsule sprain and bone bruise as per the MRI scan he underwent after getting injured during the preseason game against the Dallas Mavericks. Suggs was ruled out for the rest of the game and was taken for further testing to determine the severity of the injury.

As per the Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley, Suggs’ X-rays on the lower left leg came back negative following the game, and hence he took an MRI. With just four minutes remaining in the first quarter, Suggs made an awkward step on his left leg, which caused a hyperextension.

The Gonzaga guard, who was selected with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2021 draft, was helped back to the locker room while putting very little weight on his leg. Suggs started the 2022-23 preseason as the point guard with the first unit to open the season.

The medical update was reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who said, “Orlando Magic G Jalen Suggs has sustained a left knee capsule sprain and bone bruise, sources tell ESPN. His timeline on a return will depend on response to treatment, but there’s relief it wasn’t a more serious injury.”

This is not the first health concern surrounding Suggs as in the early offseason he underwent surgery to improve a slight stress fracture in his right ankle. Hence, this summer, he went through rehab. “He’s worked his tail off and he’s going to continue to work his tail off,” said Magic Head Coach Jamahl Mosley. “That’s what we can depend on from him.”

Before the stress fracture, Suggs had his rookie season interrupted by a fractured right thumb. He averaged 11.8 points and 4.4 assists in 48 games. The 6-foot-5 guard was set to get a larger role in Orlando as the team is already without their starting point guard Markelle Fultz, who is out indefinitely as he suffered a fractured left big toe before training camp.
