Indian women’s cricket great Jhulan Goswami will be hanging her boots after the tour to England and she will be then entering into a contract with one of the ten Men’s IPL teams as a mentor in the upcoming season. The veteran pacer who has played more than 200 ODIs will feature in the India vs England ODI series and Goswami will call it a day after the third match at Lord’s.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) included Goswami in the squad for the ODI series against England after she was deemed fit to play by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). And as per reports, the board also informed that the series’ last match scheduled for 24 September will be Goswami’s farewell match. BCCI has planned to move on from Goswami and work on young pacers.
Now, as the 39-year-old who represented the country across the three formats for more than two decades will be announcing her retirement, franchises and domestic teams are trying to rope in the experienced campaigner to share her knowledge with younger players. It’s reported that Goswami will take the mentorship role with one of the Men’s IPL teams in the 2023 season. Also, the veteran pacer is also keeping options open for the inaugural edition of the Women's IPL.
“ESPNcricinfo understands Goswami is keeping her options open for the inaugural women's IPL that is scheduled for March 2023. She is also in discussions with a men's IPL team for a mentoring role,” claimed a report from the media house. Meanwhile, the 39-year-old is also touted to join Bengal’s domestic team as a mentor for the upcoming season. “…she will be a player and mentor for the Bengal women's team for the upcoming domestic season,” the report further claimed.
Notably, Goswami began her international career as a 19-year-old in March 2002, and over the course of two decades, she played 12 Tests, 68 T20 internationals, and 201 ODIs. She holds the record for the most wickets in ODIs - 252 - and has featured in six 50-over World Cups.
