Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer raised concerns after team India’s loss against Sri Lanka in the recently-concluded ODI series. Jaffer pointed out his concerns about Team India’s preparations for the forthcoming 2025 Champions Trophy. The ex-cricketer said that the Men in Blue have only a few games left before they compete in the mega ICC tournament. Notably, India, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma and guidance of newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir, lost their ODI assignment against Sri Lanka 0-2 (3).
In the third ODI against the Islanders, India fell short of 110 runs and lost a bilateral ODI series to the neighbours for the first time in 27 years. Notably, India played their first ODI assignment following their heartbreaking loss to six-time ODI World Champions Australia in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 in November, last year. With the Champions Trophy set to place next year, the loss raised concerns among fans and pundits alike, including Jaffer.
He took to X to share, “SL played better cricket and deserve the series win. It doesn't worry me that India lost a series. Wins and losses are part of the game. However it's a point of concern that India has just 3 ODIs before the Champions Trophy.”
According to ANI, India will play their next ODI assignment in February 2025, where they will be up against England in a three-match home series. On the other hand, India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma accepted that there are a few areas where the team has made mistakes during the post-match press conference. He said, “As far as the team is concerned, and how I look at it, we need to admit where we have made mistakes, we didn't dominate against spin. On such wickets, you need to dominate a bit and the Sri Lankan spinners had consistently kept us under pressure in all three games.”
