One of the biggest esports titles in the world, League of Legends has announced some key details about its world championship, the League of Legends Worlds 2023. The tournament will be returning to South Korea for the first time since 2018, where IG defeated Fnatic to become the World Champions.

LOL Esports released a new and updated format for the global event which is set to make the tournament more competitive and entertaining. The format seems to take inspiration from Counter Strike Global Offensive majors. With the changes, LEC and LCS teams could have a fighting chance and avoid another set of demolishing results by LCK and LPL teams.

When and where will the League of Legends Worlds 2023 take place?

The League of Legends Worlds 2023 will be hosted by South Korea in October.


What is the prize pool for the League of Legends Worlds 2023?

The League of Legends Worlds 2022 had a massive prize pool of 2.23 million U.S. dollars and hence the prize money could be around this number. 


What is the new format for the   League of Legends Worlds 2023?

The League of Legends Worlds 2023 will take place in three sections: Play-ins, Swiss and Knockout stages. But before the Play-in of the Worlds Qualifying Series (WQS) where the fourth-placed teams from LEC and LCS will compete in a best-of-five match to qualify for World 2023. 


After the WQS, the Play-in stage will start which includes 22 teams from the following:

  • Top 2 teams from VCS and PCS 
  • The best teams from LLA, CBLOL, LJL, and the winner of WQS 

Teams directly participating in the Swiss stage are as follows: 

  •  4 seeds from LPL and LCK 
  •  3 seeds from LEC and LCS 

Here the tournament will have four-team double-elimination brackets, out of which only two teams will reach the Swiss stage. Each group plays a best-of-three double-elimination bracket. The upper winner from one group will then face off against the lower winner from the other group in a best-of-five match for Swiss stage qualification.


The Swiss Stage is another new addition where teams will lock horns in a five-round Swiss format where orgs with similar records will play against other. After five rounds, eight teams with the best records will reach the knockout stage. The final stage of the LOL World 2023 will see the top eight teams playing in standard best-of-five games in the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and final.
