Paris Saint-Germain President Nasser Al-Khelaifi expressed that he is confident about keeping Lionel Messi in the French capital for the next season, amidst multiple transfer rumours. Several reports over the last few months have stated that the Argentine international is set for a return to Barcelona and even a possible big-money move to the USA.
But Al-Khelaifi has shunned away all those rumours and has expressed confidence in ‘Definitely’ re-signing Messi while speaking to Sky Sports. He then spoke about how the 35-year-old looks extremely happy with Argentina at the World Cup.
Al-Khelaifi said, "He's very happy, you can see that with the national team. If a player's not happy you will see their performance not good for the national team. He performed fantastically this season for us, he's scored a lot of goals and assists for the national team and for the club.”
The PSG President then stated that the club will have to set up contract talks with the former Barcelona man after the marquee tournament. He said, "So what we agreed together - that after the World Cup, sit down together. But both sides - our side of the club and him - are very happy, so we will talk after the World Cup.”
Nasser Al-Khelaifi also was asked about signing Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who is now a free agent. But PSG's boss deemed a possible move as ‘impossible’ and stated that they don’t have a vacant position for him.
Al-Khelaifi said, "He's a legend, he's a star. The footballer, I admire and love him as a player and professional. A fantastic player. 37 now - he's doing amazing. But every single club wants to sign him too. The problem today for us is we have the position [filled] - his position - so it's not easy to replace the position that we have with him. It would be impossible, honestly, for us."
