Breaking record comes easy to Argentina legend Lionel Messi. While he recently ended his drought of an international trophy as Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in the final, he also broke a record off the field after the historic moment. Post the match, Messi shared a picture of himself holding the Copa America trophy which has broken all sorts of records on Instagram. Messi, widely regarded as one of the best football players to have ever played the game, had only one missing silverware in his trophy cabinet and that too changed with him leading his national team to the historic win.

His photo with the trophy has now received over 19 million likes, which is a record for all sports-related post on the platform. No other post in the entire sports world on Instagram has received more likes which are only going to increase with the passage of time. To put things into perspective, LeBron James Insta post mourning the late Kobe Bryant had garnered 15.5 million likes, while Messi's own post where he mourned the death of former Argentina World Cup winner Diego Maradona in November last year has 16.4 million likes.

Messi to sign a 5-year contract extension with Barcelona: Reports

However, it should be noted that it is not the most liked post on Instagram but tops the list only on sports-related posts. Meanwhile, reports are claiming that Messi has agreed to a wage cut before penning a 5-year contract extension with FC Barcelona.

Messi, who is the club's all-time top scorer and has made the most appearances for them in their history, had in all technicality ended his 21-year long association with the club last month and currently happens to be a free agent after his previous contract got expired.

According to a newspaper report carried by El Mundo in January, Messi's last signed contract in 2017 was in fact the most lucrative contract in the history of professional sports.
