On Monday, May 19, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by six wickets, to register a complimentary win to their name in match number 61 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. After LSG posted 205 runs on the board, courtesy of a 115-run stand for the opening wicket between Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram, they failed to defend it as Abhishek Sharma played a 20-ball 59 to guide his side to a comfortable win.

For the unversed, the captain of SRH, Pat Cummins, won the toss and decided to bowl first. But his decision didn’t prove to pay dividends as the LSG openers stitched a century stand to add 115 runs for the first wicket. After Marsh departed, having scored 65 off 39 deliveries, Rishabh Pant once again left everyone in disappointment as he was dismissed for seven, courtesy a sharp return catch by Eshan Malinga.

Thereafter, Nicholas Pooran joined Markram in the middle and added crucial 45 runs off 26 deliveries to help the host put up 205 on the board. Among the bowlers, Eshan Malinga proved pivotal, picking up two wickets, whereas Harsh Dubey, Harshal Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy picked a wicket apiece.

SRH ends LSG’s playoffs hope; beat them by six wickets

In the run-chase, it was young Atharva Taide who walked in alongside Abhishek Sharma to open the inning, but his stay was short lived as a combined effort from William ‘Rourke and Digvesh Rathi sent him packing for 13 off nine deliveries. Thereafter, Abhishek Sharma steadied the innings with wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, getting to his half-century off 18 deliveries.

However, Digvesh Rathi once again brought back the drama, dismissing the set-batter at 59 off 20 deliveries. Ishan Kishan also departed shortly. Heinrich Klaasen then scored a quickfire 47 off 28 deliveries to help take SRH in a dominant position. Eventually, it was Nitish Kumar Reddy and Aniket Verma who guided the side cross the finish line with six wickets in hand after Kamindu Mendis was forced to walk off the field with a hamstring issue.

With this win, SRH not only got a consolation win to their name as they have already been knocked out of the playoffs race, they also ended LSG’s chances of making the playoffs.
