With the one-of-a-kind 100-ball tournament, The Hundred set to commence in a few days time, a few franchises will take the field with new identities. It is to be noted that recently, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) offered acquisitions of some of the teams of The Hundred tournament. In the process, several IPL franchises acquired stakes in a few teams and among them is the Manchester Originals.
Earlier this year, the Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC) confirmed of the Sanjiv Goenka-owned RPSG Group acquiring 70 per cent stake of The Hundred’s Manchester Originals, leaving only 30 per cent with the LCCC. With this, the Super Giants now have three teams across the cricket arena, including the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL, Durban Super Giants in SA20 and the Manchester Originals in The Hundred.
Manchester Originals to be renamed Manchester Super Giants from 2026
With the Manchester Originals now being co-owned by the RPSG Group, reports have revealed that team name will also be changed from its original to Manchester Super Giants. However, nothing is certain on that part, but reports in Cricbuzz have revealed that the change is set to come from 2026.
Moreover, the team could also see a change in their colour from current black to the blue. It is to be noted that the Sanjiv Goenka had acquired stake worth 107 million GBP in February 2025. Furthermore, Manchester Originals Chair, James Sheridan, believed that partnering with RPSG Group meant that they could compete at a much higher level with the IPL as the inspiration.
"We want to offer our fans an experience never before seen in English cricket - looking to the IPL, and other major sports, for inspiration, as we take our match day and fan experience to a completely different level. Whether in stadia or via digital channels, Manchester will be the team to follow in The Hundred as we will look to bring the world's top cricket stars, both female and male, to Manchester every August and provide sporting entertainment of the highest level to the people of Manchester and the wider North West, he said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
