Ruben Amorim, the Manchester United manager, has reportedly put a lot of his players on trial before the conclusion of the ongoing 2024-25 season next month. One of the biggest players with a doubtful future is Manchester United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is in the midst of a poor run recently, and with that, the club is linked with the likes of Zion Suzuki, Diogo Costa, Bart Verbruggen, and Mike Maignan potentially replacing the Cameroonian.
Notably, in their UEFA Europa League (UEL) quarter-finals first leg, Manchester United had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Lyon away from home after Andre Onana made a couple of big errors, which were converted into goals. The 29-year-old is having a tough time at his home as well after his wife Melanie Kamayou became a victim of a violent street robbery, which is why his family is currently put under 24-hour protection.
With that, Ruben Amorim decided to not include Andre Onana in the Manchester United squad for their Premier League away match against Newcastle United, replacing him with Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. On his Premier League debut, the 27-year-old had a tough outing in goal, conceding four goals in the 4-1 defeat versus their North Eastern England opponents, which also included a big error, allowing Bruno Guimaraes to score.
Andre Onana set to return for Manchester United against Lyon in UEL quarter-finals second leg
The entire situation has led to Ruben Amorim becoming undecided about whether to keep Andre Onana as his number one for the next season, and as per the report published in The i Paper, Manchester United have made it a priority to sign a new goalkeeper. Moreover, Altay Bayindir is also expected to leave the club in the summer, to get more of the first-team football elsewhere.
Manchester United are slated to take on Lyon in the second leg of the UEL quarter-finals at home on Thursday, April 17, their last chance to get a step closer to winning a trophy this season, and for that, Andre Onana will be back in goal for them.
